North Wales sunrise at LlandudnoLlandudno, the popular victorian seaside resort on the North Wales coast, is famous for having Wales's longest pier and it makes a wonderful photo subject, especially at sunrise when the sun rises directly behind it. This photo was taken on a very early, 05.30am, summer morning.. most other people were still fast asleep in their beds! The red sky at sunrise at Llandudno pierA lovely red sky to start the day at Llandudno Pier on the North Wales coast... the pier is Wales's longest and a popular attraction with visiting tourists and photographers alike. Eryri Snowdonia National park in North Wales is a stunning area for photography with some amazing photo locations. The area has 3000ft mountain peaks, including Wales's highest mountain Yr Wyddfa Snowdon, beautiful glacial lakes, some amazing waterfalls as well as a strong industrial and historical heritage with abandoned slate quarries such as Dinorwig above Llanberis, Cwmorthin near Blaenau Ffestiniog and the impressive castles of Conwy and Caernarfon along the North Wales coast. Photo opportunities are everywhere as Snowdonia also has several restored steam trains including the Welsh Highland railway that runs though the beautiful village of Beddgelert and the Ffestiniog railway that transports you from the seaside harbour in Porthmadog to the slate-quarrying town of Blaenau Ffestiniog through some dramatic Snowdonia mountain scenery.

As a landscape photographer, and author of the photo location guidebook Photographing North Wales , I spend lots of time hiking the Eryri Snowdonia mountains looking for the best views and location to photograph. Llanwrst

Grey Mares Tail LlanwrstGrey Mares Tail waterfall at Llanwrst Llanwrst is located in the heart of the Conwy valley on the edge of Eryri Snowdonia. It’s a very popular spot for photography in North Wales with the famous 15th Century  Tu Hwnt i'r Bont tearoom and the nearby 17th Century Pont Fawr. It’s also home to one of Snowdonia’s least known waterfalls, The Grey Mare’s Tail, set in secluded woodland just on the outskirts of the village.

Sunrise at Tu Hwnt I'r Bont tea room in LlanwrstA photo of Tu Hwnt I'r Bont tea room at Llanwrst at sunrise with the Virginia Creeper in full bloom and lovely autumnal colours in the surrounding woodland Tu Hwnt I’r is Snowdonia’s most popular tearoom and one of the UK’s most photographed. It’s located alongside the River Conwy in Llanwrst, it’s an easy photo location to find being on the main road. 

Llanwrst photo location 2: Grey Mare’s Tail Waterfall

Grey Mare’s Tail is a lovely twin waterfall hidden away in an ancient North Wales woodland, often missed by photographers visiting Snowdonia.  The best place to take a photo is from alongside the outlet stream, just a few metres before reaching the falls; the stream creates a nice lead-in effect and creates a strong foreground.

Beddgelert village

Beddgelert station of the Welsh Highland RailwayA steam locomotive arrives at Beddgelert from Caernarfon on the Welsh Highland Railway Beddgelert is a wonderfully photogenic location with riverside walks and wildflower meadows, attractive stone cottages, a heritage railway and one of Snowdonia’s most famous legends, Gelert the dog.  

Beddgelert is the perfect place for a Eryri Snowdonia photography trip. The village itself has some attractive stone buildings and lovely riverside walks; it sits at the junction of the Afon Colwyn and Afon Glaslyn. The Welsh Highland Railway has a station on the edge of the village with a backdrop of the peak of Moel Hebog; time it right and you get 2 steam locomotives for the price of one as they’re timetabled to meet at the station. As with much of Snowdonia the village is also steeped in legend and the short walk through attractive meadows to Gelerts grave is worth the effort, not only to absorb the story of Prince Llewelyn’s faithful hound written on the tombstone but also for the mountain views; Snowdon looking north east and Moel Hebog to the north; don’t miss the bronze statue of Gelert hidden in stone ruins of Beudy Buarth Gwyn, just past the grave.  

Bala 

Bala reflections on Llyn TegidStunning spring morning reflections on Llyn Tegid at Bala in Snowdonia National Park The historic town of Bala sits at the head of the Llyn Tegid, the largest natural lake in Wales, in an area known as the Welsh Lake District and an area of Eryri Snowdonia less frequented by photographers. It’s popular for watersports and it’s heritage narrow gauge railway, Bala Lake Railway, one of the “Great Little Trains of Wales”.  

Bala Photo location 1: Bala Lake Foreshore

The main viewpoint for Llyn Tegid is from the foreshore with distant views of the more isolated Snowdonia Aran Mountain range. During busy periods water sport activities, sailing, canoeing and windsurfing provide the chance of action shots, a long lens is advisable for this. 

Bala Photo location 2: Llangower Station & lake shore

For a good shot of the locomotives with a lake backdrop take a drive further down the B4403 on the south side of the lake, there are a couple of good viewpoints along the road. The lake shore itself offers good views of the Aran mountains. It’s bordered by trees with twisted, weather worn roots; great for detail shots.

Viewpoint 3: Bala Lake Railway

Bala Lake RailwaySteam train running on the Bala Lake Railway The narrow gauge railway dates from 1868 and operates both heritage steam and diesel locomotives. Llanuwchllyn station provides opportunities of photographing approaching locomotives and static detail shots on the platform. The station buildings are particularly photogenic, a fascinating glimpse into a bygone era. Try a wide shot of the waiting room with its Snowdonia mountain backdrop of the Aran range.

Betws-y-coed

Home to the most popular waterfall in Eryri Snowdonia, in fact in the whole of North Wales, Swallow Falls.  The 15th century Pont Y Pair Bridge, in the centre of Betws-y-coed is also a great photo location, especially when the salmon make their autumnal dash upstream.

Autumn at Swallow FallsAutumnal colours at Swallow falls near Betws-y-coed in the Snowdonia National Park The main visitors area at Swallow Falls is accessed via the turnstile directly alongside the A5, opposite the Swallow Falls Hotel. You have a choice of photo opportunities here with several manmade viewpoints, it's best to explore them all although the upper ones for me provide the best scenic photographs of the falls. 

Photo viewpoint 2: Miners Bridge

Miners Bridge is located in a narrow gorge on the Afon llugwy with flows from the heart of Snowdonia through Betws-y-coed and a short drive away from Swallow Falls. Photo viewpoints are relatively limited so it’s a pretty easy location to photograph

Photo viewpoint 3: Pont Y Pair 

Pont Y Pair spans the River Llugwy and provides a great view of the waterfall although for photographs I’d recommend heading under the bridge where you less likely to be jostling for a spot during busy tourist months. The photo looking west to the falls is the obvious shot.

The best photo viewpoints of Tryfan

Tryfan photo Viewpoint 1: The flanks of Pen Yr Ole Wen

A snow-capped Tryfan at sunriseThe winter sunrise lighting the sky above the iconic mountain peak of Tryfan, one of the most popular peaks with visitors to Snowdonia (Eryri) in North Wales. This photo was taken from the flanks of Pen Yr Ole Wen looking across the Ogwen valley, one of the best viewpoints to photograph Tryfan.

Climbing on to the flanks of Pen Yr Ole Wen provides a wonderful vantage point to capture the forbiding peak of Tryfan surrounded by its sister peaks of the Glyderau mountain range. Using a wide lens it’s also possible to include glacial Llyn Ogwen in the shot, although the higher you climb the less of the lake you’ll fit in the frame. There’s good foreground interest to be had here too; the numerous cascades of the Afon Lloer are particularly photogenic.

Tryfan photo Viewpoint 2: Gwern Gof Uchaf/Tryfan Bach

Tryfan snowfallSnowdonia's most majestic mountain Tryfan in winter snow A wide gravelled track runs along the south side of the A5 all the way from Capel Curig to the shores on Llyn Ogwen with the section close to the farm of Gwern Gof Uchaf providing some of the most dramatic views of Tryfan. The waters of the Nant Gwen Y Gof flow to the east of the farm and where the track crosses the stream you’ll find a short, but photogenic section of slate fencing; perfect foreground interest with the backdrop of Tryfan.

The path to Tryfan Bach heads south west from directly behind the farm. The views are immediately obvious and with Tryfan being pretty close a wide lens is essential. There’s plenty of rocky outcrops and surrounding vegetation for foreground interest, the ladder style reached shortly after joining the path is great too. It’s also a popular spot with climbers so a longer lens gives you the chance of an action shot.

Tryfan photo Viewpoint 3: View to Tryfan’s East face

Tryfan stunning in winter snowThe stunning view of Tryfan's east face in a winter coat of snow in Snowdonia National Park (Eryri) North Wales The East face of Tryfan is arguably its most dramatic and this viewpoint offers an excellent place to capture it at its best.

Best time of year/day

Summer sunrise at Viewpoint 1 produces warm light on all of the facing peaks of the Glyderau mountains, short winter days are trickier with the sun rising directly in the frame to the east side of Tryfan.  A visit following recent rain is a good idea here too if you want the best foreground from the water of the Afon Lloer. Viewpoint 2 sees good early morning light on the face of Tryfan all year round and sunset directly behind Tryfan in winter, likewise Viewpoint 3 is best visited just after sunrise.

Penmachno Roman Bridge in autumnThe Roman Bridge at Penmachno in autumn colours. Whilst it's locally known as the "Roman Bridge" it's actually a 16th century packhorse bridge, although perhaps it was built to replace one of roman origins

The sunrise wasn't really happening, a few spots of rain and just a few glimpses of colour but nothing much until this one. I'd originally setup directly in front of the tree, which often tends to be the best spot for composition here, but I moved to this slightly different angle when the sunburst started, I think it balances things a little better.

Menai BridgeMenai bridge photograph. This photo of the Menai bridge is taken from undoubtedly the most famous viewpoint on Anglesey. The snow-capped Snowdonia mountains provide a picture postcard backdrop to the fantastic structure of Thomas Telfords Menai Bridge. On the way the cloud cover looked a little heavier than had been forecast, nothing unusual there, so I wasn’t overly optimistic of catching some morning colour in the sky but one thing you learn as a landscape photographer in the UK is never say never!

I arrived plenty early again and after a short wander around the riverside it was quickly apparent that the view from the bridge over the River Dee was the best option, the sun was rising behind the church so the composition from here definitely worked. Camera setup it was just a waiting game, with fingers crossed. Fortunately my luck was in and some light made it through the clouds to add some colour to the sky.

Driving through the darkness of early morning small pockets of mist appeared and disappeared which got me a little excited that a misty sunrise  in the Dee Valley at Carrog might be awaiting me, what a bonus for my first visit to this location that would be. I arrived nice and early, a good 40 minutes before sunrise, and the river was shrouded in mist, swirling around the quaint buildings making up the small village of Carrog.

I walked the viewpoints and decided on the bridge across the Dee as my first shot, the Dee was in partial flood and ripping through the valley so the noise on the bridge, shrouded in mist, was a little eerie as I awaited the sunrise. As things turned out the mist was pretty persistent, hovering around the village, swamping the rising sun and shrouding the Berwyn mountains in the distance. Patience paid off though and as it started to lift I took this shot of the wide flow of the River Dee passing below the village buildings of Carrog. A 3 stop ND filter just lengthened the exposure to flatten out the ripples in the river... my first photo for the LifeDeeRiver project sorted and the rest of the day to walk the riverside views heading towards Bala.

Happy Christmas & New Year from North Wales photographer Simon KitchinI'd like to wish everyone that's shown an interest in my photography a safe and happy Christmas & New Year. It's not been the easiest 2020 for anyone so I hope 2021 brings better times to all.

I took the chance that sunset might give me a chance of a decent photo and my patience was rewarded with just a few minutes of magic light. The sunset looked pretty good over the Snowdon Horseshoe but looking behind me, over the peaks of the Glyderau mountains was even better so I manged to get shots of both before more cloud rolled in and it was time to make my way back down the Pyg Track and head off home.... all in all a day full of atmosphere, great to be out in with the bonus of a couple of nice photos!

The viewpoint of Tryfan isn't too high, around 600ft, but in winter it's a paddle through constant mud and water to get there... if you're going make sure your footwear is waterproof!! The snowline was just below the viewpoint alongside the Afon Lloer which made footing at the side of the waterfall a little tricky, as did the 30mpf gusty wind which seemed to be having fun blowing the contents of the waterfall frequently onto the camera lens and me! The first few minutes after sunrise didn't look overly promising, cloudy and no hint of sun but the winds worked in my favour soon after with the appearance of some breaks in the cloud cover. Another 15minutes later and a little bit of magic happened... the rising sun broke through the cloud to light up the sky in suble, orange tones. It only lasted for 20 minutes before the snow moved in but what a 20 minutes, I'd waited several years for this winter sunrise photo of Tryfan so fantastic to get the shot I'd hoped for at last... in fact not just the one but several.

Just a heads up before you upgrade though, the new version is more demanding on your PC, especially your graphics card. If your current one is over 4yrs old it's unlikely to be up to the job. You'll soon know as you get the dreaded error "Could not complete your request" and whilst you can disable GPU support Photoshop runs painfully slow so basically factor in around £200 for a new GPU... I'm just awaiting delivery of mine!

If anyone does find the need  of a new graphics card I can recommend the Gigabyte Geforce GTX "Mini".... not nearly as expensive as the top gaming cards but still runs Photoshop comfortably, has 2 HDMI ports if you run 2 monitors and also it's fine if you only have a 300W PSU, no need to upgrade that too as you would with the higher end graphics cards. It's also pretty small so should fit in pretty much any case, just needs 2 "knockouts" where the PCI-E slot is.

It's definitely a dilemma choosing what lenses to use for landscape photography, zooms, primes, focal lengths, how many to carry.

The temptation is often to want to cover every single focal length so the obvious option would be a 24-70 zoom and a 70-200 or 300 zoom. You're then missing the ultra wide though so you might want something like the Tamron 15-30 f2.8... and then you think I'm missing a prime, so you buy a "nifty 50". perhaps a 50mm 1.8... the problem then is twofold:

1. You want to carry them all with you... that's some weight & bulk!

2. When you're out with the camera you end up spending far too much time deliberating which lens to use.

So keeping lens choice simple can be the best way... for landscapes you generally have time on your hands so changing lenses isn't an issue which means prime lense are a great option... they're usually lighter, sharper, less bulky and have less distortion and vignetting. I usually just carry a 20mm, a 45mm and then for the longer end do throw in a zoom, a 70-200F4... F4 as I don't need the speed of a 2.8 which is a bulkier/heavier lens and actually has just as good image quality for landscapes where you're generally shooting at small apertures.

Coincidentally this guy has pretty much the same setup as me, worth a watch of the video... note too he mentions that limiting the focal range of lenses you carry can actually help with composition too!

Next stop the popular waterfall, Swallow Falls on the outskirts of Betws-y-coed and the autumn colours were really looking bright here the sun having risen into the sky lit the woodland up nicely and really made those colours "pop".

On to a spot I'd not visited with the camera before, the so called Roman Bridge near Penmachno. A stunning little gorge on the Afon Machno with the autumn colours really adding some nice detail to the shot too. I spent quite a while here as the light was changing, direct sun on the water making exposure a bit tricky.

Final stop of the day was a riverside wander from Betws-y-coed up to the Miners bridge. I've photographed Miners Bridge several times and this trip didn't offer anything new so I concentrated on the woodland itself. My Irix 15mm lens came in really handy for a slightly different photo of the pine trees.

I shot this in both .jpg and Raw format.... just in case... jpg is the format that your camera/phone outputs to produce a finished image without you doing any editing, Raw however must be edited (it's essentially a digital negative).

Pretty much every camera's metering system is programmed by the manufacturer to try and protect the brightest part of a scene.. so on a landscape it's trying hard to keep those lovely sunset colours in the sky. So with this in mind the bottom image is the one I left to the camera (jpg), the top image is the one that I edited (Raw). Whilst my camera left to it's own devices did a great job of keeping most of the colourful sky you can see how dark the castle, the town and Conwy Mountain in the background look.. this isn't how it actually looked, by eye I could see much more detail of all those dark features.

That's why editing is an invaluable part of photography as shooting the top image in Raw format allowed me to edit it to much closer replicate what I actually witnessed, it really is pretty close to how my eyes saw it.

Modern cameras, and especially phones, have many inbuilt "auto" modes or HDR modes to try and cope with this situation and are doing an increasingly good job of it.... but remember the editing has to be done by someone, these days it's simply a choice of you either letting the camera manufacturer decide on the best edits and it being done inside the camera as you take the photo... or by shooting Raw, you making the decision instead and do your own editing.

The reason that many us now edit our own photos isn't that we want to create some weird, over enhanced image, it's that we like to think we'll do a better job of replicating what we actually witnessed. The camera manufacturer didn't have the luck to see what we did so can only produce settings based on what they think a landscape image should look like.... an impossible task as light and colour is ever changing.

Hope this made sense and you found it useful... I appreciate editing certainly isn't for everyone and in reality it isn't always necessary... most of my travel photos are taken in jpg. When the light gets challenging as in this photo though editing makes a really big difference.
