A misty morning at Llyn Y Gadair in Eryri Snowdonia
Back to Eryri/Snowdonia today for another captivating experience and a leisurely wander around the incredibly beautiful Llyn Y Gadair, nestled near Rhyd Ddu, on a wonderfully misty morning. Llyn y Gadair once played a significant role in supporting the railway that transported slate from the Gadair-wyllt Quarry. This particular quarry was operational for several decades, specifically from 1885 to 1920, and during this time, slate waste was unfortunately dumped into the lake for a substantial period. Towards the east, on the majestic slopes of Yr Wyddfa, one can find the remains of the Ffridd Slate Quarry, which tells a story of the region’s industrial history. At one point, quarrying, mining, and farming formed the primary livelihoods of the local populace, with vibrant villages such as Rhyd Ddu constructed entirely to house the families who relied on mining for their sustenance. Even today, farming remains one of the principal livelihoods within this stunning National Park, and the impressive mountains like Yr Wyddfa are home to a vast, intricate patchwork of charming hill farms.
