Cwmorthin & Rhosydd Slate Quarry workshop - new for 2026!
I’ve just added dates for a brand new Eryri/Snowdonia slate quarry workshop for 2026 exploring the Unesco World Heritage quarries of Cwmorthin & Rhosydd near Blaenau Ffestiniog in North Wales.
The Cwmorthin & Rhosydd slate quarry one day photography workshops are the perfect opportunity to develop your eye for composition and improve your photography skills in a unique industrial landscape in Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park. Cwmorthin and Rhosydd quarries are two of Wales’ most photogenic and atmospheric abandoned slate mines. Located on the outskirts of Tanygrisiau in North Wales and surrounded by the stunning Moelwyn mountains they form a major part of the UNESCO Slate Landscape of North Wales. Exploring the abandoned quarries photo opportunities may include inclines, derelict buildings such as Cwmorthin Terrace, Plas Cwmorthin and Rhosydd Barracks and stunning views of the Moelwyn mountains and views over Llyn Cwmorthin.
Difficulty Rating - Moderate, a good level of fitness & mobility is required

CWMORTHIN & RHOSYDD QUARRY WORKSHOP (DIFFICULTY RATING ”MODERATE”, good mobility & fitness required): This workshop begins by exploring Cwmorthin and climbs steadily, involving approx 1000ft height gain, to the dramatic abandoned buidings and stunning views of Rhosydd Barracks so requires a good level of both fitness and mobility and a reasonable head for heights. The total distance walked is approx 4 miles, but with frequent photography stops along the way.
