Watkin Path Waterfalls: A Photography Guide

Looking for your next breathtaking photography location in North Wales? The Watkin Path waterfalls offer one of the most magical, picture-perfect walks in Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park. Whether you are a seasoned landscape photographer or just love snapping photos on your phone, this trail is a paradise of rushing water, deep turquoise pools, and dramatic mountain backdrops.

Grab your camera gear, lace up your hiking boots, and let’s take a virtual wander along this stunning riverside trail.

The Journey Begins: Into the Ancient Woodland

The adventure starts at the Pont Bethania car park in Craflwyn. Right from the beginning, the trail feels like stepping into a fairy tale. The path leads you through a lush, green canopy of ancient oak woodland.

  • Photography Tip: Keep your camera out early. The way the morning sun filters through the leaves creates beautiful, dappled light on the moss-covered stone walls.

Chasing the Sound of Rushing Water

As you leave the woods, the valley opens up, and the sound of rushing water grows louder. You are now walking alongside the Afon Llan, the river that feeds the famous cascades.

The waterfalls on the Watkin Path soon come into view, dropping dramatically down the mountainside in a series of steps. The water here is famously clear, pooling into deep, vibrant pools that look like they belong in a fantasy novel.

Slowing Down the Shutter

This is where the real fun begins for photographers. The variety of angles here is incredible. You can shoot wide-open landscape shots that capture the waterfalls with the peaks of Eryri towering behind them, or get down close to the water's edge.

  • The Long Exposure Shot: To get that silky-smooth, dreamy water effect, use a tripod and a Neutral Density (ND) filter. Slow your shutter speed down to between 1/2 a second and 2 seconds.

  • The Detail Shot: Don't forget to look down. The swirling bubbles in the rock pools and the wet, dark slate contrast beautifully with the white foam of the falls.

The Famous Wild Swimming Pools

Further up, you’ll reach the iconic series of pools and a beautiful old stone bridge. On a clear day, the water shifts between shades of emerald green and deep blue. It is a highly popular spot for wild swimmers, but for a photographer, it offers the perfect foreground element to anchor your composition. Try using the curves of the riverbanks to lead your viewer's eye right through the frame.

Heading Home with a Full Memory Card

As you pack up your camera and head back down the trail, you'll realize that the Watkin Path isn't just a hike to a summit—it’s an experience to be savored slowly, one frame at a time. The changing light ensures that no two visits look exactly the same.

📸 Photography Gear Essentials for the Watkin Path waterfalls:

  • Tripod: Essential for sharp, long-exposure waterfall shots.

  • Polarising Filter: Removes glare from the water's surface and makes the turquoise pools pop.

  • Lens Cloth: The mist from the falls will get on your lens, so keep a cloth handy!
