A misty morning at my favourite Loch Maree viewpoint

The thing that I really enjoy about landscape photography in the UK's changeable weather is that you're forever presented with photo opportunities that, more than likely, in perfect conditions you'd probably never even take, infact more than likely you wouldn't even see them.

In Scotland in particular it seem that lone trees become a bit of a “thing” and this beautiful little tree on the shores of Loch Maree Torridon is one of those subjects that just drew me in last week as the rain poured and the mist rolled down the loch. Drenched in water the colours really "popped" and it looked amazing against the gloom of the weather. It quickly became my favourite Loch Maree viewpoint last week!

Landscape photography in these weather conditions can certainly be challenging so there’s an essential item or two I’d recommend you invest in if you don’t already have them. The No1 most important thing is to protect yourself from the elements and from my experience you just can’t beat a good quality Goretex waterproof jacket, believe me I’ve stood in many a downpour and the 3 different Goretex jackets I’ve had over the years have been invaluable. When it come to protecting your camera gear then obviously weather-proofed camera bodies and lenses are a good idea but that does come at an additional cost so as an alternative option something like the Think Tank Emergency Rain Cover is a great idea, even though I have a weather sealed camera I still always use mine… better safe than sorry!
