Landscape photography at Split Rock Clachtoll Beach

Split Rock at Clachtoll beach is undoubtedly one of the most popular and visually striking sections of the coastline in Assynt. Clachtoll lies just a few miles up the road from Lochinver, though the route is rather narrow and winding, so it’s wise to take your time driving and is known for its beautiful white sands, turquoise waters, and dramatic mountain views. It's located on the North Coast 500 route so its a very busy place in the summer months and it’s also a location that’s a favorite amongst landscape photographers, yet during my visit in November, it felt like a peaceful retreat, with only a couple of dog walkers leisurely strolling along the expansive sands. The light was typical of Scotland’s often moody and brooding atmosphere, which lent an atmospheric quality to the scene. I spent a couple of hours observing the cloud formations drifting westward, and near sunset, a brief break in the clouds allowed a solitary sunbeam to dramatically illuminate the distant skyline, creating a perfect moment worth capturing. Clachtoll is definitely a place I’ll be back too, in the not too distant future all being well!

If you’re visiting the beach it’s also worth stopping off at the famous Asynt Crofters Trust Strone viewpoint carpark on the way back, the views looking to Suilven are stunning and you may catch some stunning sunset light on the Assynt mountains, unfortunately it wasn’t to be be for me but you might have more luck!
