A week photographing Scotland - Bow Fiddle Rock

I’m just back home after spending a fantastic week of landscape photography in Scotland, based around Poolewe in the Torridon area and the amazing landscapes of Assynt. My first Scotland photo location however was on the journey there, making a detour to the amazing natural stone arch of Bow Fiddle Rock at Portknockie on the Moray Coast, it gets its name as the arch is said to resemble a bow poised above a fiddle. I arrived on a moody, windy day.. ok probably not exactly unusual for Scotland in November… and whilst colour was scarce, mood and dramatic seas were plentiful so having explored potential viewpoints I decided the best idea was to walk down onto the beach and explore the foreground options… as the tide was high there several intersting rock formations to choose from. Camera settings wise I chose a small aperture, F11, wanting to get everything nicely in focus and then I experimented with numerous shutter speeds, choosing 2 seconds to achieve the look of the sea I was hoping for. The image edit was done on black & white to make the best of the weather conditions, hope you like it.

This is the first in a series of Scotland Landscape photography blogs based on my week long trip so watch this space or drop into my Facebook page to see more images for the week.
