Dinorwic Quarry above Llanberis was once the second largest slate quarry in the world and the Dinorwic slate quarry photography workshop is an opportunity to improve your photography skills in this unique and amazing area of Eryri Snowdonia’s industrial heritage. Exploring the vast areas of the quarry photo opportunities may include the abandoned inclines, derelict buildings including Anglesey Barracks, the secret Dinorwic waterfall and stunning views of the Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) mountain range and Llyn Padarn alongside Llanberis.

DINORWIG WORKSHOP 1 (DIFFICULTY RATING ”HIGH”, high mobility & fitness required):

This workshop explores the higher levels of the quarry workings, starting at the “secret” waterfall and climbing approx 700 feet on steep quarry paths to explore the numerous abandoned buildings including the Caban and the Cutting Shed, dramatic quarry workings and extensive views across to the Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) mountain range & over the lakes of Llyn Padarn and Llyn Peris near Llanberis.

DINORWIG WORKSHOP 2 (DIFFICULTY RATING ”MODERATE”, good mobility & fitness required):

This workshop concentrates on the lower levels of the quarry workings which require less physical effort to access but are nonetheless photogenic. Starting at the “secret” waterfall and making our way down to the amazing Anglesey Barracks, exploring abandoned inclines, drum houses and numerous buildings all with and views across to the Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) mountain range & over the lakes of Llyn Padarn and Llyn Peris near Llanberis.

  • Are the Dinorwig photography courses suitable for all skill levels?

    All photography courses at Dinorwig Slate Quarry are suitable for all skill levels from complete beginner to experienced photographers.

  • What aspects of landscape photography does the workshop include?

    The course includes comprehensive advice on all aspects of landscape photography including:

    • camera controls/settings such as aperture, shutter speed, manual, histogram;

    • filter choice and how to use them creatively;

    • equipment advice on lenses, tripods, camera bodies;

    • creative composition advice helping to understand how elements like light, color, texture, and shape interact to create visually interesting and emotive images.  

       

  • How large are the group sizes on Dinorwig Quarry Photography Workshops?

    Group sizes on the Dinorwig Quarry course are kept to a maximum of 4 participants to ensure everyone gets full support during the day.

  • What time does the workshop begin and end?

    The one day Dinorwic workshop start at 08.00am and finish around 2.30pm.

  • Is the host photographer an experienced landscape photographer and knowledgable about Dinorwig Slate Quarry?

    Simon Kitchin has been hosting landscape photography workshops in North Wales for over 15years and is an award-winning and well published landscape photographer. Simon is a local North Wales based photographer and the author of the extremely popular guidebook PHOTOGRAPHING NORTH WALES and has explored Dinorwig Quarry extensively so has expert knowledge of the area.

  • Is the host photographer an experienced teacher?

    Simon Kitchin has over 15 years of helping people improve their photography skills having taught hundreds of photographers and also has professional teaching qualifications: BA (Hons) Degree in Education & Training.

  • What fitness levels are required to attend Dinorwig Slate Quarry workshop?

    • Workshop 1 which explores the higher levels of Dinorwig quarry requires both a good head for heights and a high level of fitness and mobility. Total distance walked is approx 4 miles with significant height gain of approx 700ft utilising often uneven, undulating and some steep paths through quarry workings. 

    • Workshop 2 which explores the lower quarry levels around Anglesey Barracks requires a moderate level of fitness as it does involve approx 200ft of height gain and involves so short but steep paths.

    Unfortunately the Dinorwig workshops are both unsuitable for those with limited mobility or low fitness levels.

  • What do I need to bring with me on the workshop?

    Essential items include: Camera (with aperture/shutter/manual controls) and a choice of lenses, a packed lunch/snacks and drinks, warm/waterproof clothing and good footwear.

    Optional items include: Filters, your camera user manual, a tripod

  • What happens in bad weather?

    I monitor weather forecasts and if conditions are predicted to be completely unsuitable, to ensure both your safety and enjoyment of the day, it may be necessary to cancel a workshop. I will endeavour to provide at least 24hrs notice, although this cannot always be guaranteed; you will be offered either a full refund or a place on a future course. Weather can be unpredictable all year round in Eryri Snowdonia and workshops can take place in very changeable conditions throughout the year so you need to be suitably prepared, just in case.

    Due to the nature of the paths in the higher quarry area in certain weather conditions, for safety reasons, this workshop may operate in the lower, more accessible quarry areas including Anglesey Barracks. Participants will be notified in advance.

  • What is NOT included in the Dinorwic Quarry photography workshops?

    A packed lunch, accommodation, insurance. I recommend you consider obtaining suitable personal insurance to cover both your equipment and travel.
