Dinorwic Quarry above Llanberis was once the second largest slate quarry in the world and the Dinorwic slate quarry photography workshop is an opportunity to improve your photography skills in this unique and amazing area of Eryri Snowdonia’s industrial heritage. This workshop concentrates on the lower levels of the quarry workings accessible to the public with photo opportunities which may include abandoned inclines, derelict buildings such as the dramatic Anglesey Barracks and stunning views of the Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) mountain range and Llyn Padarn alongside Llanberis.

  • Difficulty Rating - Moderate, a good level of fitness & mobility is required

  • A Photo-walk involving a total of approx 4 miles & 600ft height gain

DINORWIG WORKSHOP (DIFFICULTY RATING ”MODERATE”, good mobility & fitness required): This workshop concentrates on the lower levels of the quarry workings accessible to the public. We photograph the amazing Anglesey Barracks, explore drum houses and abandoned buildings with stunning views across to the Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) mountain range & over the lakes of Llyn Padarn and Llyn Peris near Llanberis.

The Cwmorthin & Rhosydd slate quarry one day photography workshops are the perfect opportunity to develop your eye for composition and improve your photography skills in a unique industrial landscape in Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park. Cwmorthin and Rhosydd quarries are two of Wales’ most photogenic and atmospheric abandoned slate mines. Located on the outskirts of Tanygrisiau in North Wales and surrounded by the stunning Moelwyn mountains they form a major part of the UNESCO Slate Landscape of North Wales. Exploring the abandoned quarries photo opportunities may include inclines, derelict buildings such as Cwmorthin Terrace, Plas Cwmorthin and Rhosydd Barracks and stunning views of the Moelwyn mountains and views over Llyn Cwmorthin.

CWMORTHIN & RHOSYDD QUARRY WORKSHOP (DIFFICULTY RATING ”MODERATE”, good mobility & fitness required): This workshop begins by exploring Cwmorthin and climbs steadily, involving approx 1000ft height gain, to the dramatic abandoned buidings and stunning views of Rhosydd Barracks so requires a good level of both fitness and mobility and a reasonable head for heights. The total distance walked is approx 4 miles, but with frequent photography stops along the way.

  • Are the slate quarry photography courses suitable for all skill levels?

    All photography courses at Dinorwig Slate Quarry are suitable for all skill levels from complete beginner to experienced photographers.

  • What aspects of landscape photography does the workshop include?

    The course includes comprehensive advice on all aspects of landscape photography including:

    • camera controls/settings such as aperture, shutter speed, manual, histogram;

    • filter choice and how to use them creatively;

    • equipment advice on lenses, tripods, camera bodies;

    • creative composition advice helping to understand how elements like light, color, texture, and shape interact to create visually interesting and emotive images.  

  • How large are the group sizes on Eryri/Snowdonia Slate Quarry Photography Workshops?

    Group sizes on the slate quarry courses are kept to a maximum of 4 participants.

  • What time does the workshop begin and end?

    The one day Eryri/Snowdonia Slate Quarry workshops start at 08.00am and finish around 2.30pm.

  • Is the host photographer an experienced landscape photographer and knowledgable about Eryri/Snowdonia Slate Quarries?

    Simon Kitchin has been hosting landscape photography workshops in North Wales for over 15 years and is an award-winning and well published landscape photographer. Simon is a local North Wales based photographer and the author of the extremely popular guidebook PHOTOGRAPHING NORTH WALES and has explored ther areas slate quarries extensively so has expert knowledge of the area.

  • Is the host photographer an experienced teacher?

    Simon Kitchin has over 15 years of helping people improve their photography skills having taught hundreds of photographers and also has professional teaching qualifications: BA (Hons) Degree in Education & Training.

  • What fitness levels are required to attend Slate Quarry workshops?

    All the slate quarry workshops require a moderate level of fitness and good level of mobility as the day can involve utilising some relatively steep inclines on uneven slate paths. Access to Rhosydd Quarry from Cwmorthing involves approx 1000ft height gain and all the slate quarry workshops involve approx 4 miles of walking (includes regular stops for photo opportunites). Unfortunately the slate quarry workshops are unsuitable for those with limited mobility or low fitness levels.

  • What do I need to bring with me on the workshop?

    Essential items include: Camera (with aperture/shutter/manual controls) and a choice of lenses, a packed lunch/snacks and drinks, warm/waterproof clothing and good footwear. Optional items include: Filters, your camera user manual, a tripod

  • What happens in bad weather?

    I monitor weather forecasts and if conditions are predicted to be completely unsuitable, to ensure both your safety and enjoyment of the day, it may be necessary to cancel a workshop. I will endeavour to provide at least 24hrs notice, although this cannot always be guaranteed; you will be offered either a full refund or a place on a future course. Weather can be unpredictable all year round in Eryri Snowdonia and workshops can take place in very changeable conditions throughout the year so you need to be suitably prepared, just in case.

  • What is NOT included in Eryri/Snowdonia Slate Quarry photography workshops?

    A packed lunch, accommodation, insurance. I recommend you consider obtaining suitable personal insurance to cover both your equipment and travel.
